Using Your Out-of-Network Insurance Benefits

If you have an insurance plan that I am not in-network with, you could consider using your out-of-network (OON) benefits. Many insurance PPO plans offer reimbursement for OON therapy services. This means you may be able to get a portion of your session fee paid for by your insurance—sometimes up to 60-80%!

  • The easiest way is to call the member number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

    • “Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?”

    • “What percentage of my therapy costs will be reimbursed?”

    • “What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it has been met?”

    • “How do I submit a claim for reimbursement?”

  • A superbill is a receipt for therapy that includes all the details your insurance company needs in order to reimburse you based on your OON benefits. Upon request, I can provide you with a superbill. You’ll submit it to your insurance company (either through their online portal, email, or mail) to request reimbursement.

  • If your plan doesn’t include OON benefits, you can still use Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to pay for therapy with pre-tax dollars, which can help reduce costs.

Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 985-3059.
